What is the difference between electroplating and anodizing?

Electroplating deposits a layer of a different metal, such as zinc, nickel, or chrome, onto a part's surface using an electric current, and can be applied to steel, brass, copper, and other base metals. Anodizing is an electrochemical process that converts the surface of the base metal itself, almost always aluminum, into a durable oxide layer, rather than adding a separate metal coating. AASA can advise on which process fits your base metal and function.

What is the difference between rack plating and barrel plating?

Rack plating fixes individual parts to a rack for even current distribution, suited to larger parts or those with critical surfaces and tight thickness tolerances. Barrel plating tumbles a batch of small parts loosely in a rotating barrel, which is faster and more economical for high volumes of small hardware such as fasteners. AASA matches your part to the right process based on size, geometry, and volume.

Can AASA source RoHS-compliant or hexavalent-chromium-free plating?

What plating thickness can be specified, and how is it measured?

Plating thickness is typically specified in microns or millionths of an inch and varies by process and application, from a few microns for decorative or corrosion-resistant coatings to considerably more for hard chrome wear surfaces.
