What is the difference between Type II and Type III hardcoat anodizing?

Type II anodizing uses a sulfuric acid process to build a moderate oxide layer suited to corrosion resistance, color, and general cosmetic finish. Type III, known as hardcoat anodizing, builds a thicker, denser coating that adds wear resistance and surface hardness, making it the choice for functional parts like pistons, valves, and sliding or wear-bearing components. AASA can recommend which type fits your application based on function and appearance requirements.

Can AASA match a specific anodized color?

Yes. Color anodizing uses a dye immersion step after the anodic coating forms, and factories in AASA's network can match standard colors or work from a physical sample or color reference to get close to a custom shade. Because dye uptake varies slightly by aluminum alloy, we recommend a sample approval step before full production.

Does anodizing add dimensional thickness to a part?

Yes. Anodizing grows the oxide layer partly into and partly out of the original surface, so it does add measurable thickness, typically a few microns for Type II and up to 25 to 50 microns or more for Type III hardcoat. For parts with tight tolerances or press-fit features, this growth should be accounted for in the drawing before anodizing.

Can AASA anodize parts with tight tolerances or threaded features?

Yes. AASA's factory partners can mask threads, bores, and other critical features to keep them free of coating buildup, and can plan for anodizing growth on toleranced dimensions. Sharing your drawing with called-out critical features lets us confirm the right masking and process approach before production.

Which aluminum alloys anodize best?

6063 and 6061 generally anodize with a clear, consistent cosmetic finish and are common choices for architectural and appearance parts. 5052 and 7075 anodize well for structural and hardcoat applications. 2024 and other copper-bearing alloys anodize with a yellow or gray tint and are typically chosen for function over cosmetic appearance.
